A thermostat is a valve in the outboard cooling system that opens or shuts based on temperature. When the thermostat is closed, it stops cooling water from flowing through the outboard. It increases the operating temperature of the engine. The thermostat prevents cooling water from reaching the cylinder walls until sufficient heat for effective combustion is achieved. When the cylinder temperature reaches a certain level, the thermostat permits cooling water to flow from the water pump via the water jacket and out the exhaust. Key Features:
